The Refuge - Mountain Hostel
Les Fonts

History

Joseph Marie Mogenier, resident of Sixt and grandfather of the present keeper, bought the mountain hut, which would become the refuge, in 1924. He renovated it, then opened it in 1926 under the name "Cantine de Fonts". He was a professional guide and believed in the future of tourism in the valley.

With the help of his wife Adeline, he welcomed clients who, at the time were mainly walking the Sixt -Chamonix route. The canteen had, at the time, 6 small rooms. Adeline, who was referred to as Mémé, prepared many local dishes with care.
Fifty six years later, their grandson Didier took over. Since 1982 he, his wife Beatrice, and their children Nathalie and Benoit, continue to welcome tourists.
Today the tradition and adventure continues for the Mogenier family who appreciate every new season at the refuge.
