The Refuge - Mountain Hostel History Joseph Marie Mogenier, resident of Sixt and grandfather of the present keeper, bought the mountain hut, which would become the refuge, in 1924. He renovated it, then opened it in 1926 under the name "Cantine de Fonts". He was a professional guide and believed in the future of tourism in the valley. With the help of his wife Adeline, he welcomed clients who, at the
time were mainly walking the Sixt -Chamonix route. The canteen had,
at the time, 6 small rooms. Adeline, who was referred to as Mémé,
prepared many local dishes with care.
